CMIP 2026 Sustainability

The CMIP Panel, and wider WCRP, are committed to promoting sustainable practices at all meetings, workshops and conferences. Below we outline the steps taken towards making CMIP 2026 as sustainable as possible and how you, as a participant, can contribute:

  • Reduced Footprint: The event features hybrid options to minimize travel-related emissions with all plenary, science and side sessions available in real time, and recorded, for virtual participants. Two dedicated virtual poster sessions are also provided to ensure a full experience for those joining virtually.
  • Waste Reduction: Printing has been largely eliminated, and name badges are made from 100% recycled paper and lanyards from recycled plastic. We will collect unwanted lanyards at the end of the meeting to be reused at future CMIP events.
  • Reusable Items: Water tanks will be provided, and we encourage participants to bring their own reusable water bottles and coffee cups. Teas and coffees served during workshop breaks will be in ceramic rather paper cups.
  • Sustainable Transport: We encourage participants to use public transport or active travel at all times. For details on local transport and other useful transport links please see https://cmip2026.org/practical-information/local-transport/.
  • Catering: A minimum of 50% of food served during the workshop will be vegetarian.
  • Energy & Venue: Details on the sustainability approaches of the ICC Kyoto can be found at https://www.icckyoto.or.jp/en/icc-kyoto-initiatives/sustainable/
